Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Visits Australia

 
   
  His Excellency Mr. Vayalar Ravi, Hon. Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs visited Australia from 15-18 October 2006. During the visit Hon. Minister had meetings with the Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs of Australia, the Hon. Amanda Vanstone, and the Minister for Education, Science & Training of Australia, the Hon Julie Bishop, MP, in Canberra and Hon. John So, Lord Mayor of Melbourne.

Hon. Minister in his meetings with the Hon. Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs and Hon. Minister for Education, Science & Training of Australia, discussed the issue of visa procedures for Indians, particularly in respect of students. Hon. Minister addressed members of the Indian community in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne. In his address to Indian community members, Hon. Minister referred to the role of persons of Indian origin and Government initiatives regarding   Indian diaspora, including the Overseas Citizenship of India Scheme.

Hon. Minister addressed queries pertaining to investments in India, facilities provided by the Government etc. He invited
members of the Indian community to attend the next Pravasi Bharatiya Divas being held in New Delhi in January, 2007. A promotional film on Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was also screened and Mr. Malay Mishra, Joint Secretary accompanying the
  Hon. Minister made a presentation on the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.

Hon. Minister laid a wreath at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra and attended the Deepavali function at the Federal Parliament with Sen. Amanda Vanstone. He also participated in an interactive session with academics and students at the College of Asia and Pacific Studies, Australian National University, Canberra.

 
     
     
 

Diwali Celebrations in Australia
The Indian community in Australia widely celebrated Diwali with various events across Australia. Some of the major events included a function at the Federal Parliament House and a reception by ACT Chief Minister Hon. John Stanhope in Canberra; and a function at the New South Wales Parliament attended by Chief Minister Hon. Moriss Iemma.

 
     
 

     
  Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2006
The next edition of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is scheduled from 7th-9th January 2007 at Vigyan Bhawan, Delhi. The event will provide an exclusive showcase of India to overseas Indian delegates comprising the largest gathering of the Global Indian Family.

More than 2000 Overseas Indian delegates are expected to participate from across 70 countries, alongwith more than 1200 Indian delegates. Interactive sessions including country focussed sessions, exhibitions, cultural programmes will form part of the programme. The Pravasi Bhartiya Divas is being organised by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs in partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industry and supported by the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi.
