Hon. John
Howard, Prime Minister of Australia, accompanied by Mrs. Janette Howard,
several senior officials and a business delegation, paid a State visit
to India from 5-9 March, 2006. During the visit, he called on President
Dr.A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance
Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, and had bilateral discussions with Prime Minister
Dr. Manmohan Singh. Commerce and Industry Minister Mr.Kamal Nath,
Minister of State for External Affairs Mr. E. Ahmad and Leader of
the Opposition Mr.L.K. Advani called on PM Howard. |

Six agreements were signed during
the visit including an MoU on Customs Cooperation, a Trade and Economic
Framework, an Air Services Agreement, an MoU on Defence Cooperation,
an MoU on Cooperation in Biotechnology and a Letter of Intent on the
Establishment of India-Australia Strategic Research Fund.
PM Howard visited Mumbai and Chennai apart from New Delhi. In Chennai,
he met the Governor and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. PM Howard addressed
business meetings hosted by CII, FICCI and ASSOCHAM (Delhi), Bombay
Chamber of Commerce (Mumbai) and Indo-Australia Chamber of Commerce
(Chennai). He also delivered an address at the Indian Institute of
Technology, Chennai.
The visit of PM Howard, his second as PM of Australia, contributed
to the ongoing efforts to forge closer political and economic ties
between Australia and India. |

Commonwealth Games 2006
Lt. Governor and Chief Minister of
Delhi visit Melbourne
Indian participation in the Melbourne
2006 Commonwealth Games was a satisfying and enriching experience.
India ranked 4th in the medals with 22 gold, 17 silver and 11
bronze medals. Indian Shooter Samresh Jung received the David
Dixon Award for Best Athlete. |

Lt. Governor
of Delhi Mr. B.L. Joshi represented India at the Opening Ceremony.
He met the Mayor of Melbourne Hon. John So and visited Ballarat.
Chief Minister of Delhi Smt. Sheila Dikshit represented India
at the Closing Ceremony and received the Games Flag for the
Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010. She met the Premier of Victoria
Mr. Steve Bracks and Mayor of Melbourne.
India made an impressive cultural presentation at the Closing
Ceremony on 26 March. About 900 performing artistes from India
and local Indians, several Bollywood personalities and senior
sports persons participated in |

the presentation, which was greatly
appreciated by the audience and received positive and widespread
media coverage.
There was close interaction between the Organising Committees
of Melbourne 2006 and Delhi 2010 Games. Officials from India
were closely involved with the organizational aspects of the
Games through the Secondment and Observers programmes. The
cities of Melbourne and Ballarat had adopted India as their
Second Team in addition to Austsralia.

Melbourne City Council in

cooperation in the
Confederation of Indian Industry on 24 March. Mr. Sunil Kant
Munjal, Vice-President of CII led a business delegation for
the Exchange. Chief Minister Smt. Sheila Dikshit delivered
an address at the Business Exchange.
Apart from the cultural presentation at the Games Closing
Ceremony, a large number of Indian artistes visited Australia
for performances during the Games in Melbourne and other cities,
including Mr. Amjad Ali Khan, Dr. L. Subramanium, Daksha Sheths
dance troupe, Musafir Gypsies from Rajasthan, Jaipur Kawa
Brass Brand, etc.
