Hon. Finance
Minister of India, Mr. P. Chidambaram, visited Australia from 15-19
November. During the visit, the Finance Minister called on the Prime
Minister of Australia, Mr. John Howard, and met the Treasurer of Australia,
Mr. Peter Costello.

In Sydney, the Finance Minister
addressed a luncheon meeting organised by the Australia-India
Business Council. He also addressed the CEOs and senior
functionaries of industry and business and interacted
with business persons of Indian
origin
at a dinner yesterday by the
High Commissioner. A delegation of the Australian Industry
Group led by its Chief Executive Ms. Heather Ridout called
on the Finance Minister.

addressed a boardroom meeting
of CEOs and senior executives
of top levelAustralian companies
hosted by Mr. Charlers Goode, Chairman of the ANZ Bank and Woodside
Petroleum. A delegation from the Global Foundation also called
on the Finance Minister.
In his interactions, Finance Minister spoke about economic development
in India and growing India-Australia relations. He
welcomed the growing trade between India and Australia. He also
complimented the Indian IT companies on their successes in Australia.
He called for increased cooperation particularly in the areas
of infrastructure, energy and food-processing.
He addressed a Press Conference organised by the Foreign Correspondents
Association in Sydney, and also gave several interviews to the
media in Sydney and Melbourne.

Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors' Meeting Finance Minister Mr.
P. Chidambaram and Dr. Y. V. Reddy, Governor of Reserve
Bank of India attended the G-20 Meeting of Finance Ministers
and Central Bank Governors in Melbourne on
18-19 November.
On the sidelines of the G-20 Meeting, Finance Minister
Chidambaram had meetings with Finance Ministers of Russia
and Japan; Deputy Secretary, US Treasury; and MD of International
Monetary Fund. He also participated in the meeting of
Finance Ministers of BRICs countries (Brazil, Russia,
India & China).
Pravasi
Bharatiya Divas The next edition of
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is scheduled from 7th-9th January
2007 at Vigyan Bhawan, Delhi. The event will provide an
exclusive showcase of India to overseas Indian delegates
comprising the largest gathering of the Global Indian
Family.
More than 2000 Overseas Indian delegates are expected
to participate from across 70 countries, alongwith more
than 1200 Indian delegates. Interactive sessions including
country focussed sessions, exhibitions, cultural programmes
will form part of the programme. The Pravasi Bhartiya
Divas is being organised by the Ministry of Overseas Indian
Affairs in partnership with the Confederation of Indian
Industry and supported by the Government of the National
Capital Territory of Delhi.
