  INDIA CELEBRATES 58th REPUBLIC DAY



The President Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, the chief guest President of the Russian Federation Mr. Vladimir V. Putin and the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh arrive for the 58th Republic Day Parade - 2007, in New Delhi on January 26, 2007.

 

A strong and resurgent India celebrated its 58th Republic Day on 26 January 2007.  Military parades were held in Delhi and various cities across the country. This year, Russian President Vladimir Putin joined Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Abdul Kalam as the guest of honor for celebrations in New Delhi.

In his address to the Nation on the eve of 58th Republic Day, the President outlined abundant opportunities in which every citizen can contribute. Spelling out the "ambience in 2020", the President stressed the need for a "national movement of development" to achieve these goals."In this movement, every citizen, every constituent of our democracy has to participate", he said. Elaborating on it, he said, "Citizens participation can be in many important areas like; Reaching the unreached, Feedback on service to the people, Human Resource Development, Entrepreneurship, Role of Home makers, Environment development, Youth participation in the political system with a focus on developed India".

This year’s parade highlighted the nation’s achievements in various fields, the military prowess, scintillating display of air power as also our rich and diverse cultural heritage. Tableaux from 26 states and Central Ministries and Departments presented the varied historical, architectural and cultural heritage of the country. They also showcased country’s progress in different fields. Tableaux of Military World Games - 2007, Border Surveillance, Remount Veterinary Corps and Networking for efficiency and combat power were a major attraction of the parade. Twenty-Four children, who have been selected for the National Bravery Award – 2006 participated in the parade riding on caparisoned elephants.

In the children’s pageant section, more than 1200 boys and girls drawn from different school of Delhi and various cultural zones presented dances and other programmes.

The motorcycle display by the Shwet Ashw of the Corps of Military Police was  a major attraction of the parade. They l performed breathtaking stunts in a synchronised and synergistic display of mind, body and machine coordination. The grand finale of the parade was a spectacular flypast by the IL-78 Air-to-Air Refuellers and Sukhoi 30 MKI fighter aircraft in Tanker formation, followed by series of Jaguar and MIG 29 fighter aircraft in Arrowhead formation.

In History:
It was the Lahore Session of the Indian National Congress at midnight of December 31, 1929 - January 1, 1930, that the Tri-Colour Flag was unfurled by the nationalists and a pledge taken that every year on January 26, the "Independence Day" would be celebrated and that the people would unceasingly strive for the establishment of a Sovereign Democratic Republic of India.

The professed pledge was successfully redeemed on 26 January, 1950, when the Constitution of India framed by the Constituent Assembly of India came into force, although the Independence from the British rule was achieved on August 15, 1947.

Republic Day Celebration in Canberra
The Republic Day of India was celebrated at the High Commission of India in Canberra on 26 January with Flag Hoisting followed by the Acting High Commissioner reading out the President’s message. A brief cultural programme including patriotic songs by Indian community children was presented on the occasion. Republic Day was also celebrated by the Consulates General of India in Melbourne and Sydney.

 

 

5TH INDIA-ASEAN SUMMIT


His Excellency Dr. Manmohan Singh, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India participated in the 5th India-ASEAN Summit and the 2nd East Asia Summit held in Cebu (The Philippines) on 14-15 January, 2007.

The India-ASEAN Summit reviewed progress of various initiatives such as the Partnership for Peace, Progress and Prosperity which was signed during the Indo-ASEAN Summit at Vientiane in 2004.

 

India and ASEAN discussed cooperation in the areas of science and technology, research development, proposed FTA between India and ASEAN and civil aviation, information and communications technology, biotechnology, traditional medicines and antiretroviral drugs, Tsunami early warning systems and sharing of information and expertise to combat terrorism.

PRAVASI BHARATIYA DIVAS 2007 HELD
 
 
     


Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) 2007 was inaugurated by Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh on January 7 in New Delhi. The theme for the event this year was “Rooting for the Roots”.
