despite the pressing generic competition in the global markets,

New Remittance system for NRIs launched
In order to help non-resident Indians (NRIs) to send money home faster,
cheaper and more efficiently a new system of remittance has been announced.
The Indian Finance Minister P Chidambaram launched it at the fourth
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, a global conference of overseas Indians in
Hyderabad.
Remittances to India have been steadily increasing over the years,
said Mr. Chidambaram and the
electronic integrated remittance gateway was developed by the Ministry
of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) and UTI Bank. He said that of the
$21.7 billion (BD8.2 billion) remitted last year, $17.3 billion came
from workers overseas - especially those living in the Gulf. The new
gateway is expected to encourage NRIs to become investors, rather
than depositors alone. He added that the Indian government was planning
to bring more reforms into the banking sector. 'The Reserve Bank of
India Act and the Banking Regulations Act will be amended during the
parliament session next month,' he said.
'This will take the banking sector reforms forward and strengthen
the economy further. The pension and insurance sector reforms too
are high on the government agenda.'
