Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission visits Australia |

Hon. Deputy
Chairman, Planning Commission of India , Dr. M.S. Ahluwalia, visited
Australia from 19 to 23 September at the invitation of the University
of Melbourne and the High Commission. Dr. Ahluwalia delivered the
annual David Finch Lecture on 22 September at the University of Melbourne
on The Transition to International Financial Integration
Indias Perspective.

Dr. Ahluwalia in his Lecture
dwelt at length on Indias reform programme, covering areas
such as trade policy, foreign investment, financial sector,
infrastructure, taxation and domestic deregulation. The Lecture
was attended by academia and the general public and was followed
by an active interaction with the audience.
Dr. Ahluwalia called on Hon. Mr. Steve Bracks, Premier of Victoria,
on 22 September. During the meeting, various areas of present
and possible future areas of cooperation, specially in the food-processing
sector, were discussed.
The on-going cooperation in the context of the Commonwealth
Games to be held in Melbourne in 2006 and subsequently in Delhi
in 2010 was also noted as contributing to the relationship between
Victoria and India. |

Dr.Ahluwalia participated
in several interactions with representatives of Australian industry
and business. The Chairmen/CEOs of several leading Australian
companies, including Chairman of Australian Stock Exchange Mr.
Maurice Newman; Chairman of Lowy Institute and Westfield Mr.
Frank Lowy; Chairman of ANZ Bank/Woodside Petroleum Mr. Charles
Goode; Chairman, Telstra Corporation Mr.Donald McGauchie; and
Deputy Chairman of Macquarie Bank Mr. Warwick Smith, met the
Deputy Chairman. The Global Foundation and the Australia-India
Business Council arranged interactions in Sydney and Melbourne
with the business community.
During all these interactions, Dr. Ahluwalia spoke of the importance
of deepening Indo-Australian business ties and of his personal
commitment to furthering this engagement. |

A.R. Rahman
concerts in Australia
Audiences in Australia were treated to two A.R. Rahman
concerts in Melbourne (10 September) and Sydney (17 September).
The concerts included several popular artistes such as Hariharan,
Shankar Mahadevan, Alka Yagnik, Sadhana Sargam and Sivamani.
The concert in Melbourne was attended by High Commissioner,
and in Sydney by Consul General. The concerts were organised
by Charindaa, a charitable organisation in aid of
Udayan, a child leprosy centre in Kolkata. Former Australian
cricketer Steve Waugh is the Chief Patron of Udayan. |
