India’s 59th Independence Day was celebrated with much pomp and gaiety across Australia on 15 August.

At the High Commission of India in Canberra, a flag raising ceremony was held, following which the High Commissioner, Mr. P.P. Shukla read out a message from the Hon. President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Afterwards, students from the Hindi School in Canberra added to the gaiety by performing patriotic songs.

Apart from Canberra, the High Commissioner also attended the functions in Brisbane and Townsville. Other places celebrating the Indian Independence Day include the Indian Consulate General office in Sydney.
